There are essentially 3 types of flagpoles. Residential, commercial and telescoping. Commercial flagpoles are for both business and residential use. They are much more durable than either residential or telescoping and will generally last a lifetime.
MOST RESIDENTIAL FLAGPOLES are sectional and range in height from 6 feet to 35 feet. The sections are coupled by means of a swaged end that fits into the larger end of the next section. The pole thickness is measured in gauge. The larger the gauge number the thinner the tubular wall thickness. The minimum to look for is a 16 gauge. The thickest I have found is a 12 gauge pole. I would very cautious of any seller offering any residential pole thicker than 12 gauge as I don't believe they exist. A residential flagpole will not stand up against 30 MPH winds while flying a flag or 40 MPH without a flag. These are estimates and both flagpole height and flag size will cause variances. A 16 foot flagpole will withstand more wind than a 30 foot flying the same flag. Ninety nine point nine percent of these sectional flagpoles are foreign made. Please remember that all residential sectional flagpoles will sway to some degree. It is not dangerous. Each section joint must move a little or you could not assemble it. The taller the flagpole the more it will sway.
THE COMMERCIAL FLAGPOLES are generally single section but some have 2 or even 3 sections. They taper from the base end to the top. The smallest is 3 inches at the base narrowing to less than 2 inches at the top. The thinnest has a 1/8th inch sidewall thickness which is about an 8 gauge flagpole. These flagpoles are too long and too heavy to be shipped by FedEx or UPS. A trucking company will handle the delivery. These flagpoles are 2 to 3 times more expensive than a residential flagpole but most will withstand hurricane force winds. Most all are made in the USA
TELESCOPING FLAGPOLES offer convenience over a sectional or commercial but most are pretty weak. There is one exception built in the USA by the TITAN Company. It has a proven track record, boasts a 90 MPH wind rating and is a 12 gauge flagpole. If you can't quite see your way clear to purchase a commercial flagpole, this is most certainly a close second!! This is one great telescoping flagpole! It has NO spring loaded locking buttons, rather it employs interlocking pole sections. Beware of telescoping flagpoles selling for less than 100.00 as they will likely be an 18 gauge aluminum flagpole and quite deficient in durability.
FLAG SIZE is yet another factor. Generally the flag height should not exceed 20 percent of the flagpole height. For example, a 4' X 6' flag would be correct on a 20 foot flagpole but no bigger. It will look balanced and not endanger the flagpole. A flag too large will bring a residential flagpole to the ground in a hurry.
